Tangier, the soul of a city
There are places where the soul of the world is reflected, Tangier is one of them.
Tangier is mediation in its essence. An in-between space, across multiple temporal landmarks, shaping at once a meeting between all paradigms, within a space-time that reminds everyone of the course of history. A form of connection to the world through human, urban, and environmental landscapes.
From the passage of the Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths, English, Portuguese, and Arabs to its international city era, Tangier has experienced a superposition of traces, histories, and ways of life over time, and sometimes within the same historical moment, layered upon an indigenous Berber continuity. Tangier was above all a point of departure and retreat through its port, a rear base in constant transformation. The same constant transformation that has shaped the city into what it is today.
Thanks to its geographical, natural, and multicultural assets, Tangier is a place of value and influence: the arrival of the major port of TangerMed has propelled it back onto the international stage in the 21st century, following its cosmopolitan and international phase throughout the 20th century. Tangier has been a center of international diplomacy, the site of major historical treaties and key negotiations, shaping an identity, architectural, and urban richness that reflects its different historical phases.
The celebration of the UCLG Congress and World Summit of Local and Regional Governments is part of a current dynamic of revitalizing the diplomatic, civic, and multicultural dimension that forms the city’s DNA.
Tangier will host the World Congress at the Palais des Arts from June 22 to 25, 2026.
Welcome to Tangier.
